Parshah Korach

Argument for the sake of what

Korach's rebellion sounds egalitarian. The Sages read it as ego dressed in the language of principle.

'All the congregation is holy,' Korach argues. The words are technically true. The motive, tradition teaches, is not. Pirkei Avot distinguishes between arguments for the sake of Heaven and arguments not for the sake of Heaven.

The distinction is uncomfortable because it asks about interior life, not slogan. Am I fighting for the truth, or for my place?

This week, examine one argument you are in. What are you actually defending?
