Parshah Vayechi

Blessing the next generation

Yaakov's final act is not instruction, it is blessing. He names each child truthfully and sends them forward.

The blessings at the end of Bereshit are startlingly honest. Yaakov does not flatter his sons. He names them, their strengths, their failures, their futures, and in doing so, he frees them to become themselves.

A blessing that cannot see clearly is not a blessing. A blessing that sees clearly and still says 'go' is legacy.

This week, offer one honest blessing to someone younger than you. Not advice. A seeing.
