Parshah Yitro

Wisdom from the outside

Torah's most transformative chapter is named after a Midianite priest. Wisdom does not care about our tribal maps.

Yitro watches Moshe judge from morning to night and says plainly: 'This thing you are doing is not good.' He offers a system of delegation. Moshe listens, and the nation is restructured, right before Sinai.

That the parshah of Revelation is named for an outsider is not incidental. It reminds us that a closed community cannot hear what it most needs.

This week, take counsel seriously from someone outside your usual circle. Their distance may be exactly what lets them see you.
