Parshah Vayera

Hospitality as revelation

Hospitality interrupts prophecy. In Torah, the guest at the door is not a distraction from holiness, it is holiness.

Avraham is mid conversation with G-d when he sees three travelers. He excuses himself from the Divine to attend to strangers. The Talmud draws a striking conclusion: welcoming guests is greater than receiving the Shekhinah.

It is easy to imagine spirituality as retreat. Vayera insists on the opposite, the deepest presence is often found in the interruption we did not schedule.

This week, treat one interruption as an appointment. Answer the call, open the door, make the coffee. See what shows up.
