Parshah Tzav

The fire that must not go out

'A perpetual fire shall burn on the altar; it shall not go out.' Some flames are our responsibility to keep alive.

The kohanim's first daily task was to remove yesterday's ashes and rekindle the fire. Renewal was not optional. Yesterday's holiness did not exempt today's work.

Every commitment worth keeping, a marriage, a practice, a craft, has this rhythm. Clear the ash. Rebuild the fire. Every day.

This week, identify one fire that is your responsibility to keep. Tend it, literally, for seven days.
